MINOAN CIVILIZATION

Arthur John Evans was an archaeologist. He named the Minoan civilization after king Minos. Places were built, destroyed and rebuilt, culminating in what archeologists call the Neopalatial period. The largest palace of this period was located in knossos. Trade and external relations were important to the Minoans.

KNOSSOS

The settlement was established as early as the 7th millennium BCE. the ruins are two: old palace and new palace
The new palace was used for ceremonial activities. The Minoan palace collapsed when Krete was overrun and conquered by a Mycenaenan invasion. The date of final destruction is still unknown.
Arthur John Evans oversaw many architectural reconstructions at Knossos. Evans overemphasize the Minoan Identity of the site living out the aspects of mycenaean culture. The site's reconstruction helped save many parts of the site.

INSIDE MINOS'S PALACE

Ladies in blue was excavated from knossos in 1914.
During the new palace phase, the ground floor was dedicated to economic activities.
The palace was lavishly decorated with wall paintings. The large stone was an important Minoan religious symbols. Other notable parts of the palace include the Theatrical Area, the Tripartite Shrine and the Piano Nobile.

MINOAN ART

During the middle and late minoan period minoans buried their dead in a terracotta coffin know as a larnax. the coffins were shaped like bathtubsor chest and were often painted with scenes chosen for their funerary significance. coffins had also domestic uses.
Evans discovered ancient tablets and they define the forms of Minoan writing. The tablet detailed the transfer of coriander. The deciphering of tablets has given historians aspects of Minoan culture and society.
